Communication

3rd Jan 2017

In 1aa we encourage communication from our pupils through everything we do. For some children communication may be making eye contact with the adult to request more of an enjoyable activity or reaching for a favoured object again! For example during song time reaching for the crocodile to request tickles or looking at the adult in anticipation. Some children use talking tins to ask for more, for example the adult will stop the bubble machine and wait for the child to press the more button to request more bubbles. Some children are using communication books to request individual toys or snacks. This can be in discrete structured sessions where the objects are displayed in front of the children to encourage them to ask for them or spontaneously usede throughout the day when the children decide they need to communicate with the adult. As the children learn the concept of requesting and using their books independently they can request items at any time. The most important concept for the children to learn is initiating their communication and they the adult can facilitate in helping and supporting them. This looks different for all children as they all are at different stages in their development but adults differentiate for each child in order to support their progression. Take a look at our photographs to see how well we are doing and feel free to contact Sarah if you have any queries regarding your child's communication.
