How to contact the service

Referrals to the ASD Service for individual pupils can only be made through the education psychology service.  Referral must normally follow a period of intervention by the school at Stages 1 or 2 of the Code of Practice and following implementation of advice from the school’s Educational Psychologist at Stage 3.  If after a period of review no progress has been made a referral may be made through the school’s EP.  The referral must be supported by a Stage 3 Educational Psychologist assessment, education plans and reviews from Stages 2 and 3.  These should include a review of the strategies already implemented and the outcomes.

The Educational Psychologist will then submit this detailed information to the ASD panel; the evidence will be reviewed and a decision to make further provision may be agreed.

The Oakwood Advisory Team can support teachers in the mainstream schools in the following ways:

  • Oakwood ASD Service offers extensive training programmes for Principals, SENCO’s, teachers and classroom assistants. Training takes place at Oakwood ASD Training Centre.
  • Offer advice
  • Advice on the writing of IEPs.
  • Provide a report defining the areas requiring intervention and outlining the support and strategies recommended.
  • Advise teachers about suitable texts and resources.
  • Contribute to the annual review process where appropriate.
  • Follow up visits as appropriate.
  • Telephone advice
  • Assist in supporting the child in the transition to the next level of education.

Who is eligible

The Oakwood Advisory Service is a Stage 3 provision for individual children who are attending school in the Education Authority, Belfast Region. A statement of educational needs is not required to access the service.  The service also provides advice and support to children and schools at Stage 5 of the Code of Practice.
